About Me

Hot July Saturday and I was participating in an Olympic Distance Triathlon in Minneapolis. The water was too warm for a wetsuit. First Tri without a wetsuit for me. My time was about 5 minutes slower. To be expected without a wetsuit. Jumped on my bike and felt good. Definitely hot out. Drank fluids but probably not enough. Took off on the run and within a 1/2 mile started to feel the effects of the heat. Felt me heart was starting to race so I walked a little and then ran again. It was a two lap course. Did a lot more walking on the 2nd half. Heart still racing a little bit. When I finished I had a 1/2 beer. I'm not much of a beer drinker but if I have a beer my wife figures I must feel fine. The next morning laying in bed my wife, a nurse, had her elbow on my ribs. She said my heart rate was not normal. I went throughout most of the day not feeling well but ended up going to the emgency room in the evening. I was in afib. First time I am aware of this. I ended up seeing a cardiologist later that week and then had a cardioversion since my rhythm would not go back to normal. I immediately felt better with no other problems. All of my echocardiogram results were very good. No concerns with my heart. Maybe a one and done afib or maybe not. We will see as I continue with Triathlons.

On a side note: my resting heart rate is upper 40s to low 50s but my hard workout heart rate can go quite high quickly but goes back down very quickly as soon as I stop.
